SCARECROWS SUPPORT HOSPICE!

Jayne Oldmeadow, Kirkheaton resident and local Podiatrist, was concerned that Kirkwood Hospice was struggling to secure donations due to lockdown so she came up with a brilliant idea which just grew and grew. – an outdoor Scarecrow Trail around Kirkheaton! So, she set to work and pitched her idea to the village – the response was amazing!

Thanks to the creativity and hard work of enthusiastic residents 52 scarecrows went on display around the village on a very wet Saturday in August. The challenging weather didn’t deter the crowds although some did resort to their cars to ensure they stayed dry!

The scarecrows didn’t seem to mind the wet. There were sporty scarecrows playing, football, cricket, rugby, doing gymnastics and body boarding. There were busy ones tinkering with cars, emptying dustbins, nursing and sewing. Others were relaxing toasting marshmallows on a fire, reading, listening to and/or making music etc There were glamorous mermaids and beautiful princesses and even Harry Potter put in an appearance in a few locations!

One scarecrow decided to walk the Pennine Way from Pennine View while another sat at the bus stop patiently waiting for the 262 bus instead! Some even took to the sky on a zip wire and a zimmer frame!

Jayne, along with her partner Carl, raised £2211.68 for Kirkwood. An amazing total! Well done to you both and the people who helped and supported you on the day.

Well done to everyone for taking part.
