SCARECROWS SUPPORT HOSPICE!

Jayne Oldmeadow, Kirkheaton resident and local Podiatrist, was concerned that Kirkwood Hospice was struggling to secure donations due to lockdown so she came up with a brilliant idea which just grew and grew. – an outdoor Scarecrow Trail around Kirkheaton! So, she set to work and pitched her idea to the village – the response was amazing!

Thanks to the creativity and hard work of enthusiastic residents 52 scarecrows went on display around the village on a very wet Saturday in August. The challenging weather didn’t deter the crowds although some did resort to their cars to ensure they stayed dry!

The scarecrows didn’t seem to mind the wet. There were sporty scarecrows playing, football, cricket, rugby, doing gymnastics and body boarding. There were busy ones tinkering with cars, emptying dustbins, nursing and sewing. Others were relaxing toasting marshmallows on a fire, reading, listening to and/or making music etc There were glamorous mermaids and beautiful princesses and even Harry Potter put in an appearance in a few locations!

One scarecrow decided to walk the Pennine Way from Pennine View while another sat at the bus stop patiently waiting for the 262 bus instead! Some even took to the sky on a zip wire and a zimmer frame!

Jayne, along with her partner Carl, raised £2211.68 for Kirkwood. An amazing total! Well done to you both and the people who helped and supported you on the day.

Well done to everyone for taking part.

Dalton Together – Summer food sharing project

At times of crisis Dalton Together recognised the importance of coming together to support our community and made sure families and individuals didn’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, under these extraordinary circumstances.

We particularly wanted to ensure local children, families and isolated older individuals had access to free, freshly cooked healthy meals throughout the summer holidays.  So funding was generously given from the Local Ward Councillors to Dalton Together who then partnered up with the Mission Café and Lost Property Kitchen to prepare us x160 meals a week through the 6 week holidays.

Greenfields Family Centre and HD5 Care Packages secured enough donations to be able to create fifty high quality food parcels.  Each parcel contained sufficient food to feed a family of four for seven days, as well as, a selection of toiletries and cleaning products

Colleagues from Kirklees Council, Moldgreen United Reformed Church, Kirkheaton Community Centre and Greenfields Family Centre helped distribute 960 meals throughout the summer and gave out 39 food parcels.

We ensured that with every meal families and individuals had access to local helpline numbers such as the Mission, Kirklees Local Welfare Support Service and the Council’s Covid Helpline to ensure more longer term support could be accessed if needed.

With the meals, we also distributed a recipe book, children’s books and gardening kits & activities by partnering up with One 17 Trust and the Grow To Schools Initiative.  Syngenta also kindly donated hand sanitiser and face masks for each of our weekly collection points.

The support didn’t stop there, Dalton Together attracted additional support from 3 local volunteers helping out at the collection points and donated items from Humpit, Tesco’s, Morrisons and Moldgreen United Reformed Churche’s community growing garden so we could give out extra treats with the meals and food parcels each week.

This has truly been a collaborative project between….. Ward Councillors, Council Services, community organisations, local businesses and residents which is what Dalton Together (the partnership) aimed to achieve from the offset.  This has now given us the confidence to take successful elements of the project and apply for further funding through the lottery in the hope that we secure extra resources so we can continue to develop further food sharing activities across the ward so more people benefit going forward.

Dalton Together would like to thank everyone for their contributions and look forward to developing further collaborative partnership projects in the future to help improve the quality of life for our local residents.

Here are some amazing quotes that sum up what this project has meant to them:

Quotes:

From; Cllr Naheed Mather – “This initiative clearly demonstrates what can be achieved in exceptional circumstances, coming together for the benefit of our communities.

Can I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of you for contributing so much of your time and energy to making it happen. Thank You Dalton Together”

From Paul Owner of Lost Property Coffee Shop and Kitchen… I’m Paul and I’m the owner of Lost Property coffee shop and kitchen, situated just off St George’s Square in Huddersfield town centre. I have a little boy, nearly 2 years old. My fiancé and I were set to get married this August but we’ve had to postpone this due to COVID-19. We live in Dalton in a lovely cottage and have good neighbours, which helps to create a real sense of community. I took over the business in August 2019 and had been open just over 6 months when COVID-19 hit. Like many other businesses we were forced to close and were worried what the future would hold for us. After 4 weeks, we decided to trial offering Afternoon Teas for collection and delivery and luckily it has allowed our business to stay afloat. When we were approached by Dalton Together and asked if we would help provide meals for the Summer Food Share Programme, we knew it was a perfect opportunity to give back to our village and the people in it, so did not hesitate to jump on board .”

From; Janette Ward – Local Area Co-ordinator/Community Plus:

One mum said; ‘the meals are really tasty, even my boy who is a fussy eater enjoys them’

Another mum said; ‘we really appreciate the meals, we all enjoy them and we saved the containers and now we are making our own meals in bulk and using the containers to freeze them’ …. Janette said; ‘this quote was from a mum who previously hadn’t cooked meals from scratch and her children got involved choosing the meals and making them. This is a lovely outcome, it increased confidence, they are eating healthier meals and are researching recipes together.’

Janette said; ‘One family shared their appreciation because their cooker broke down just before lockdown and they only received a cooker from the Welcome Centre at the end of August’, the mum said; ‘the meals have been such a big help, two days a week we had healthy meals and not microwave ready meals, I don’t know what we would have done without them.’

One lady said; ‘the meals are delicious, I have arthritis in my hands and wouldn’t be able to make them myself, please thank everyone’

One mum said; ‘seeing you and receiving such lovely food is the highlight of my week’

One gentleman said; ‘the meals are very good, I didn’t know people could be so kind, thank you’

One mum said; ‘the meals have been a life saver, we are really struggling (financially), I can’t thank everyone enough’

Dalton comes together during the pandemic

When lockdown was announced in March this year a number of Dalton Ward residents responded quickly and set up the HD5 Mutual Aid group, helping residents in the Dalton Ward area. Working with local residents, we rallied round and provided assistance to vulnerable people that were affected by Covid 19. Leaflets were distributed and volunteers started to offer help. We soon had around 40 people delivering food, collecting prescriptions, posting letters, walking dogs and even offering a befriending service to residents who were lonely and isolated. During the peak of the lockdown it was only due to the determination and commitment of these volunteers that we were able to respond to the requests and tackle the challenges the group were presented with. We had to overcome queues at the supermarkets, ensure volunteers were safe whilst delivering and manage payments – when we were advised not to handle cash. The mutual aid group in our ward had the support of our local Councillors and anchor charities who were there to provide guidance on health and safety and answer any questions to ensure we could deliver the right service.

Over the last five months, we have responded to hundreds of requests and are still providing that support with some volunteers continuing to do the weekly shopping for the elderly or isolated during the restrictions. The Dalton Ward area has seen so many neighbours and friends come together, showing how much we care and support each other in our community. The group was personally thanked by the Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and the Mayor of Kirklees who wrote ‘It is often the case that difficult times brings out the best in people and I have met incredible people doing incredible things’  Each and every one of our Dalton Ward volunteers are incredible and we thank you from the whole community.

IT Project – Getting Connected

IT Project – Getting Connected

When social distancing and mass closure of public buildings became the norm, access to free internet was no longer available and it made the struggle for some families even more difficult.  Dalton Together recognised that there was a need to ensure that vulnerable households had access to appropriate IT equipment that fulfilled their individual needs. Some of the families targeted were already connected to the internet, but were considered to be under connected because they relied on mobile phones, which were not capable of carrying out the required tasks effectively. For Dalton Together, with the support of a grant from the Community Foundation, to be able to give families the equipment that they desperately needed was a good opportunity to raise the profile of our emerging group.

By talking to the recipients we realised that we hadn’t just given them some extra data, a tablet or a laptop but we had provided them with the means to

  • Access online help and guidance with regard to their children’s education.
  • Connect to online services important to their family’s health and wellbeing.
  • Make a positive impact on theirs and their children’s mental health by reducing isolation, anxiety, loneliness and stress.

The project also allowed Dalton Together to fulfil some of its other objectives by establishing excellent working partnerships with service providers and local businesses, as well as, contributing to the local recycling agenda by refurbishing and reusing old laptops, when possible.

Although there are a number of benefits which can be attributed to this project the most important outcome has to be that we have helped families and individuals, like the ones listed below, stay connected during the ongoing crisis, whilst at the same time reducing anxiety, loneliness and stress through access to help and services via the internet.

  • A lady and two children fleeing domestic violence and needing access to the internet to sort out finances, children’s education and to online shop as she was too scared to leave her temporary accommodation.
  • An 86 year old who had been shielding for 13 weeks and desperately wanted to make visual contact with family members who lived away.
  • A primary school child whose mental health was suffering because she was isolated from friends who had returned to school. She was unable to return because she lives in a household with her mother and older sibling, who has additional needs.  She was trying to do school work on an old mobile phone which, when not buffering, constantly crashed.

We have now spent all of the money awarded to us and are presently having to manage expectations, until we can secure additional funding to continue with the work that we have started.

Dalton Together is rapidly establishing itself as an important part of our community and it will only continue if we can attract more volunteers to continue the work that we have started.  If you are interested in volunteering, it does not have to be a weekly commitment, please get in touch via the website or email us at info@daltontogether.co.uk
