Hate Crime Awareness Week 2021 – Hope Poetry Tour

The Hate Crime Operational Group has organised the Hate Crime Week 9th – 16th October Events.
What’s Happening?
Kirklees Cohesion Team in partnership with Safe Kirklees and Batley Poets would like to invite you to a FREE ‘Poems of hope tour’ in support of National Hate Crime Awareness week.
The tour will raise awareness of hate crimes, what they are, the importance of reporting them and the support available for victims.
Each of the six themed events will feature poems specially written and performed by Batley Poets as well as information about hate crimes and the importance of reporting them, children’s activities, readings from local writing groups and an open mic for anyone wishing to get up and share messages of unity.

Hate crime and how to report it?
Hate crimes include physical attack, damage to property, offensive graffiti and inciting hatred, perceived to be aimed at someone because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. Hate incidents are similar, but not to a criminal extent, such as verbal and online abuse.
Welcome Back Pack – Helpful resources for our local community groups and volunteers

Our community venues are an important place to meet, connect, learn and share ideas. We are looking forward to the re-opening of community venues in Dalton and welcoming organised groups and activities which benefit local residents.
This pack will help you if:
1) You are group that are returning to a community venue or looking to start a new activity.
2) You are a local resident looking to return to or join a local group or activity.

To celebrate the Summer of Sport, the Community Games Fund aims to provide opportunities for communities to come together and be active.
As restrictions are lifting and to encourage people to get back out into their communities, Yorkshire Sport Foundation are offering Community Games funding across our districts. The fund will be up to £300 to each funded organisation to support the delivery of a community event. This is something to support communities to get out and be together, this isn’t connected to a national programme.
Any community organisations in Kirklees interested that meet the criteria and can offer an outdoor event (that must include sport/physical activity) for at least 3 hours can apply via the application form provided below.
What you need to know!
All successful applicants will get up to £300 towards their event.
The event must contain sport and/or physical activity.
The event must be delivered by Thursday 30 September and last for at least 3 hours.
Payment will be made 2 weeks before the event.
Events must be outside and delivered in a COVID safe way.
There are two deadlines for applications Monday 12 July and Monday 26 July.
Each successful organisation will get a pack to help them with planning including risk assessment templates, key contacts in their local authority and general event info.
If the next government deadline of 19th July is moved the Community Games will be cancelled this year.
Grow to School: School and family food growing engagement project

What is Grow to School?
Grow to School CIC are looking forward to sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for all things food growing with the seven schools in the Dalton ward. They will work throughout the rest of 2021 and into 2022 with the children, staff and families at:
Netherhall learning campus High School
Netherhall learning campus Junior School
Netherhall St James Infant School
Dalton Junior, Infant & Nursery School
Moldgreen Community Primary School
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary school
Kirkheaton Primary School
The project will support these Dalton schools & their communities to establish and run school allotment spaces. Using the Growbag programme as a basis for the food growing year, Grow to School will run seasonal sessions in each school to share knowledge and skills about how to grow fruit, vegetables, flowers & herbs throughout the year.
As well as working with the children and school staff they will be running some school garden family days at each school when it is safe to do so. The project will also support growing at home & across the ward by sharing seasonal growing packs for children to take home and by linking with other local community growing spaces, activities and projects such as From Hud with Mud and Growing Works.
After much planning and preparation, The Great Huddersfield Cleanup (GHCU) is almost here.
A community event, The GHCU invites people to sign up to litter-picking in key points identified as litter hotspots on the routes into the town centre, whether they can spare an hour, or a morning/afternoon.
Huddersfield Times is very grateful for the offers of support received so far! Blackrock Workwear has very generously donated 50 hi-viz vests to keep litter pickers safe near busy roads, as well as safety gloves. Camira at Meltham, and the Huddersfield Town Supporters Association (HTSA) have organised litter-picks to coincide with GHCU in their respective areas.
Wilkinson Woodward solicitors have kindly promoted the event to their employees and encouraged participation, and Huddersfield BID, Sustainable Huddersfield and TSL Volunteering have been promoting the event heavily on their socials. We look forward to welcoming Sophie from Huddersfield BID who has volunteered to get her hands dirty!
“The Great Huddersfield Cleanup will be giving routes into town the spring clean they need,” says Kim, one of the volunteers at Huddersfield Times. “A big push over this weekend will give Huddersfield a big boost before a busy summer!”

Volunteering opportunities and ways to help your community

Since May 17th, many charity shops, cafes and community building have re-opened and are looking for new volunteers. Third Sector Leaders have also started to get more new volunteering opportunities, both outdoors and indoors.
What’s changed for volunteering?
On 17th May, we moved into Step 3 of the Government’s lockdown easing roadmap. Charity shops, libraries, and community centres can reopen, and cafes can serve people outside. If you are volunteering somewhere other than your home, they will have rules in place to keep you and other people safe, and you will need to follow them. This might include:
wearing a face mask
regularly washing your hands and cleaning surfaces
keeping windows and doors open
making sure people give their contact details so that they can be contacted by NHS Test and Trace if there is an outbreak of coronavirus. People using a cafe or restaurant will HAVE to give their details, and can’t be served unless they do.
getting tested if you have coronavirus symptoms, or having a regular Lateral Flow test, even if you don’t have symptoms
Everyone in England without symptoms of Coronavirus can now take a free rapid test twice a week. The Government has advised that people who need to leave the home to work or volunteer should be tested twice a week.

‘Thank You’ Fund for Volunteer-Run Groups in Kirklees

Kirklees Volunteers’ Week 2021
National Volunteers’ Week from 1st to 7th June is an annual event to recognise the contribution that millions of people make across the UK through volunteering. It’s an opportunity for Third Sector Leaders (TSL) to recognise and say ‘thank you’ to volunteers in Kirklees.
This year the TSL Kirklees Volunteering team want to help groups in Kirklees say thank you to all their volunteers, particularly those who’ve done such incredible work over the last year, supporting people through the pandemic, either in person or from home.
Apply to the ‘Thank You’ Fund
If you are a volunteer-run project or group in Kirklees, then you can apply for a small fund to help you say ‘thank you’ to your volunteers. You will also receive a pack of free Volunteers’ Week thank you cards. A maximum grant of £100 is available for each organisation, but they will be able to fund more groups if people only apply for what they need.
It’s up to you how you spend the money, as long as it’s on an event or item to say thank you to your volunteers. For example, wellbeing goody bags, book vouchers, an afternoon tea delivery or tickets for an online event (please make sure any of your events are Covid-safe).
In return, they ask that you send them a photo and a quote from your volunteer group or an individual volunteer for TSL to share as part of their online Volunteers’ Week celebrations.
How to apply
The deadline for applications is Monday 24th May 2021
TSL aims to let you know within three working days if your application is successful. They will then ask you to invoice for the amount and payment will be made by bank transfer (template for an invoice can be provided if necessary).
